Spaces and Play

The Spaces and Play Leader Project is a student-led project that uses targeted teaching and learning lessons to develop students’ understandings of gender, gender stereotypes and their potentially harmful effects, diversity and gender equality across the spaces of the school environment in which they learn and play. Resources will support teachers in guiding students through the process of designing, implementing and evaluating an action plan based on their findings from the Spaces and Play assessment tools.

The Spaces and Play Leader project provides an opportunity for participating students to understand gender stereotypes that are prevalent in society today, analyse and evaluate their school environment using a gender equity lens, and create actionable changes to better their school environment to ensure gender equity across their school.

By participating in this project, students will develop a range of core skills including:

 •  Recognising and defining school wide gender equity issues

Collaborating as part of a team

 •  Learning to justify and provide reasoning for decisions and approaches

Critically analysing and reflecting upon ideas

 •  Developing public speaking and presentation skills

About Respectful Relationships

Schools and early childhood education settings provide a great opportunity to create the foundation for respectful relationships. They are safe and supportive environments that promote the learning of skills and attitudes for respectful relationships, gender equity and diversity that will help children grow up to be happy, healthy adults that are equally valued, heard and respected.

Respectful Relationships supports schools and early childhood settings to promote and model respect, positive attitudes and behaviours. It teaches our children how to build healthy relationships, resilience and confidence. Respectful Relationships education has become a core component of the Victorian Curriculum from Foundation to Year 12, and is being taught in all government schools, and many Catholic and Independent schools across the state.

The Spaces and Play Leader Project aligns with the outcomes, goals and aims of topics 7 and 8 of the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) curriculum. Its integration into a primary school setting will provide additional tools for teachers to implement and build on the RRRR curriculum and further align with the Health and Physical Education outcomes, Personal and Social Capability Outcomes, Critical and Creative thinking Capabilities and the Ethical Capabilities from the Victorian Curriculum.
