What is a bladder infection?

Bladder infection is when bacteria end up in the urinary bladder and cause symptoms of burning when you pass urine, frequency and lower abdominal pain.

In young children, a bladder infection may present itself as abdominal pain and fever.

Your bladder infection doctor will usually diagnose it on the history of your symptoms. Sometimes a urine test is necessary.

Treatment and follow up

Treatment for bladder infection usually includes a course of antibiotics.

A single urinary bladder infection does not usually require a follow-up. Sometimes when people have lots of infections they may need to have further investigations such as ultrasound scans.

Children may need further investigations to make sure that there are no underlying causes.

Prevention

Keep yourself well hydrated and go to the toilet when you need.
