The Journey of the Steps

The 'Journey of the Steps' is an artwork on display at Access Health and Community in Richmond.

About the artwork

This artwork is about a journey across time; from where Access Health and Community began to where we are today (centre connecting dots).
It is about learning, growth and connecting to country, from the land (mountains) to the waters (blue centre) to the sky above (stars and spirit lines), and to the animals and plants that co-exist with us, and sustain us in the cycle that we call life.

The birds and animals within the artwork represent the things we encounter throughout life.
It is about: Always walking forward, and never backwards (Emu), The traditional seven seasons that were important to the Indigenous people-letting people know when to hunt and gather, and remind us to respect the land (Wombat), The history of the people and the knowledge passed down from generation to generation through song and voice (Magpie), The messages that our ancestors passed along to the people, and the messages that we can still hear today, if only we listen to the sounds of Waa when he speaks to us (Crow); and of course, about our creator spirit and protector, who watches over everyone throughout their journey through life; Bunjil (Eagle).
The leaves within the artwork are manna gum leaves.

These leaves are significant to the Wurundjeri people, along with the grubs that live within those trees.
This is where the Wurundjeri name originates from – Wurun (manna gum) and Djeri (grub).
